Ava has knack for writing songs that contain snippets of stolen lyrics from other songs. Here is the song she sang to me this morning when she came in to snuggle.
“I first set my eyes on the sweet virgin mama.
Through the streets wide and narrow on the silent night
Lift your arms up and come to thee
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow you in a one horse open sleigh.”
Beautiful, isn’t it? Sounds even better lying down with a three-year-old combing her fingers through your hair.
The first person to name the most songs in this lullaby jumble wins a prize. What prize? Well, it’s coming out of the Great Purge, more on that tomorrow.
I will leave the comments open until Sunday at midnight and announce the winner on Monday! Happy guessing.

oooh! Ooh! I know some:
Jason Upton ~ can’t think of the specific name though. But Rich and I fall asleep to this song every night!
Silent Night
Jingle Bells
???? ~ I’m clueless on the others right now
ok, the Jason Upton song is “Psalm 23″
HHhhhmmmm, Ava is oh so much more well-versed in songs and lyrics than apparently I. Nonethess, here are my guesses as to the songs she has lumped together:
Irish song called something like Sweet Mollie Malone.
Silent Night
Lift Up Your Hands (??)
Jingle Bells
Surely Goodness and Mercy (it’s a Bible verse, duh, but isn’t it also a praise and worship title?)
Whew. That was a workout. I’m done. Those are my guesses.
Whoa. Crazy. My sister and I were posting at the exact same time without even knowing it. Wild.
i was just going to add Molly Malone I swear!! But Jen beat me to it (oooh sister rivalry) hehe
Ok…
Molly Malone-Streets wide and narrow
Silent Night-Obviously
Jingle Bells-Obviously
Surely Goodness and Mercy- Keith Green and everyone else that sang that song
Every time I fall-Jaci V “Lift me up”
and
Oh come oh come emmanuel “and come to thee”
Oh this is fun. You have some right answers up there, but there isn’t a true winner yet. So keep the guesses coming.
ok, here’s my final guess…phrase by phrase
“I first set my eyes on the sweet” – Molly Malone
“virgin mama” – silent night
“through the streets wide and narrow” – Molly Malone
“on the silent night” – silent night
“lift your arms up” – I have no idea about this one
“and come to thee” – Jesus, I come (gospel hymn)
“surely goodness and mercy shall follow you” – Jason Upton (song ‘Psalm 23′)
“in a one horse open sleigh” – jingle bells
I am pretty sure that I can’t do any better than what has been guessed!!
What a fun contest…and what a fun little girl who “freestyles” so wonderfully in her singing!! I love child-written songs!!
Apparently I need to be hanging out with Ava since my song knowledge is so very limited!
ok, ok I’m becoming a comment hog! But this challenge is so fun for me for some reason!
I have another song to add to my “final guess” above.
This morning Rich’s alarm went off at 5:30 (he forgot to turn it off from yesterday.) He has the alarm set to KTIS and when it turned on, the song “It is You” was playing – right at the part where they say “As we lift up our hands, will you meet us here?” I immediately thought of your contest – it is a sign from God, Rachel. haha
ok, it is a bit of a stretch, but here it is.
“lift your arms up” – inspired by It is You (worship/praise song)
I am OFFICIALLY DONE (i promise)
Nope, I haven’t got a chance. I was all excited for another contest too. As long as keep giving away chocolate, Rach, I will follow. Now I’m just curious to see the right answers.
